The Detroit Symphony Orchestra will perform George Gershwin’s groundbreaking Rhapsody in Blue in a three-concert series led by Music Director Leonard Slatkin and featuring pianist Garrick Ohlsson.
The program also includes Aaron Copland’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (with Ohlsson), Milhaud’s La Création du monde, Christopher Rouse’s 1985 work Bump, and Respighi’s symphonic poem Pines of Rome. A linchpin of the 2016-2017 season’s Gershwin and His Children theme, this concert weekend investigates the relationship between classical music and popular musical styles, a fundamental tenet of each featured composer’s work.
